Brofie said: How do you know what Prince has done for Haiti? People have been duped into thinking that a bunch of multi millionaires getting together to do a show is the greatest thing for people in crisis. It means nothing more than an excuse to exploit the situation for publicity under the guise of charity. Why dont they all just shut up and write bigger checks in private? It is We Are The World all over again. Prince isnt obligated to perform for Haiti and condemning him for not doing so is limited thinking.

Everytime he does make a new track or release a CD it's a sign that he's still at it and not retired or giving up on his fanbase. That doesn't mean everything he releases is a gem because that's not true but I still am grateful that he's still on this road for the long haul.
I'm sure the live version will some folk up! People tend to forget that there are some Prince songs that sound better live than in the studio... and he's very capable of doin just that! I don't favor the studio version much either, so I just don't bother... just waitin on the live version...hopin there is one, of course I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

I pretty like it all in all and I think Prince has got (foot) balls to sing a fight song in his falsetto voice if it was done on purpose.
We all can say it's shit but WE KNOW it would have been so easy for him to make it like we would have like to hear it. I mean with the rocking chest voice (à la Purple Rain) and with a lotta distortion guitar. I guess he keeps that trick for a possible live rendition. EVERYBODY will trip about the live version saying that it should have been recorded that way in the studio and so on. Is Prince perverse (dealing with our own frustrations) or lazy in the studio ? The way Purple and Gold has been recorded is nothing new. During most of career, Prince has published SELF MADE DEMOS IN THE STUDIO with a sense of emergency meaning that it HAD to come out that way. Even if it would have been BETTER done with MORE TIME and dedication. I guess that apart from a few records (think Lovesexy) Prince has never spent a lot of time in the studio process. And then sometimes it works and sometimes he's got flamed, like now with his (good) gay-sounding fight song. Like I've sayed before, he'll take his revenge on stage, curiously spending MUCH MORE TIME to rehearse it with the BAND (wich NEVER sounding CHEESY) and even sometimes nearly rewrite the whole arrangements of the songs (especially during the Revolution area and the first NPG area). And then, Purple and Gold... like very often, the composition of the song is pretty good, with a very good sense of melody and harmonies and some nice references to traditionnel anthem (even russian ones) BUT it's delivered in a VERY cheesy way with weak vocals (hey Prince change the key of that kind of song if you're not ABLE to reach the high notes of the melody WITHOUT using your falsetto voice the result will be much better) and plastic drums and cheesy keyboards ...etc To sum up the whole thing, I would say : PRINCE, PLEASE GIVE YOUR (most of the time) VERY GOOD SONGS, THE ARRANGEMENTS THEY DESERVE IN THE STUDIO (OR JUST STICK TO LIVE RECORDINGS TO PUBLISH THEM IN THEIR BEST FORM (wich has never been done to this time). I just listened to it for the first time. I really can't understand what the fuss is about. I agree with many it can use a remix or something like that, but I really don't think it's horrible. What's horrible is most of the stuff that's played on the radio these days by other artist. If R Kelly would have done Purple and Gold people probably would have called it genious.

I'm going to watch the Vikings vs. Saints game today, to see if they actually are gutsy enough to play "Purple and Gold" during the game. Not sure if they will, since according to what I just saw in the paper, the game is going to be in Louisiana. Even if they don't play it, I'm curious to see if the commentors during the game mention it. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

You know Prince knows how to make a song. It isn't like this is a failed rock anthem, or a rousing fight anthem gone horribly wrong - he intended it to sound like it does.
It's just that it completely fails even at that!

I honestly have a headache.
I listened to this song about 10 times yesterday... TRYING to like it. FIGHTING to like it... thinking that maybe if I just thought if it as a traditional Prince song and took the "football fight" concept out of it, that I'd like it. But I don't like it. Speaking of purple and gold, it's something that Barney the purple dinosaur would sing to Goldilocks on a Saturday afternoon kids show. Even the lyrics... "the odds are in our favor". PLEASE! Who ever says that??? You never hear a group firing themselves up by saying "The odds are in our favor!" WHAT THE FUCKS WRONG WITH YOU KID?? This song fails on so many levels. [Edited 1/24/10 8:52am] The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

Some of you are really crazy! Who gives a flying fuck about a song that's written for a football team?!? It's not meant to be a chart release nor something you've had to pay for. It's a traditional march with a melody for singing along. I think a harder rock type of thing would've been more fun, but it's not meant for me in the first place.
Those Minnesotans talk all slow and funny anyway, so it's perfect for them! [Edited 1/24/10 8:23am]

You're "beating" Prince because he supports the Vikings? Well if u were from Minnesota you'd know it's a big, bid deal. Haiti? Guess what? Every second of every day there are people suffering and dying. Always. Always. Always. Every second. Africa. Third world countries. The U.S.A. Prince does plenty for charity be doesn't feel the need to publicize it. So I guess Prince should never do anything except check in with you and see if it's alright to be happy?

(HEY COUSIN! You did a great job!)...Like George M. Cohan and Phillip B. Sousa integrated into your mind.
Your song brought the smooth transitions of a 2/4 to the forefront with more than a simple pop go easy song. You intermingled the ole college route with a play of marching integrated syncopated rhymatical meaning. I was in a military band and a cheerleader and I know what you did and how it turned out is absolutely right on with excellerated spirit. What audiences will clap their feet to and stomp is something like shakespeare met dahli, most people never get the truth until they figure it out after they feel it for real in real action. I had to post it said and, since I was in an orchestra for over nine years, a military marching band for four years and a cheerleader for two... "yeah that makes me qualified to speak it". Take care. me. [Edited 1/24/10 8:45am]

The answer to your question is that there is no "fuss". People are simply cracking jokes about one song that they don't care for...that's about it. I think most of us agree that his music is far superior to anything on the radio...that much is obvious, but if people don't like something they just don't like it and no amount of lecturing, chastising, pontificating or long drawn out explanations of the dynamics of the song is going to stop anyone from cracking jokes about it. Not saying you're doing that...just saying that all these hurt feelings on Prince's behalf are unnecessary because like I said earlier, this one apparent mishap isn't going to end his career. The next time he steps onto a stage he will rule it like the badass that he is. Prince is getting ribbed a little...Lord knows it's not the first time and he'll survive and thrive like he always does. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
